At this time of year, it is World Cultural Week at HDBJ. Under the guidance of teachers, children of all grades will complete a wonderful journey full of fun and knowledge through multidisciplinary learning. Today, together with our children, let’s start the three-day World Culture journey.
GK-The Ocean
GK children spent three days exploring the mysterious ocean. Our children learned about many underwater creatures, the plants around them and the aquatic habitat. From giant whales and tiny starfish, the children"s interest is fully ignited.
GK children also experimented with oil and water to explore the negative impact of the oil spill on the lovely penguins. Through scientific observation, the children discovered why hungry sea turtles usually mistake plastic bags as jellyfish, to directly understand the negative impact of plastic pollution on the ocean. At the end of World Cultural week, our little kids have gained global perspectives on ocean conservation.
G1- Japan
G1 children explored the land of cherry blossoms - the country of Japan. At first, the students got to know our neighboring country on the map, learning about its geographical location, administrative districts and climate features. Next, they took a virtual tour of some interesting scenic spots in Japan, learned about the beautiful cherry blossoms and created art out of this plant. They children also tried to make virtual Japanese-style food on their own.
G1 students worked together to tailor a unique Japanese travel plan for themselves with their friends: from the choice of cities to the scenic spots, and to the local food tasting, the students created an exciting trip. Some children wanted to go to the Tokyo Tower, while others made Mount Fuji their first stop. Some girls planned to spend most of their time taking pictures with the cherry blossoms and we even had students who had already decided the Japanese souvenirs that they would like to take home.
At the end of the class, the children said "Kon"nichiwa" together, looking forward to exploring a wider world next year!
G2-Brazil
Accompanied by teachers, the G2 experienced the hot and beautiful Brazil. Learning about a country often starts with its geography and culture. Children learnt the location and culture of South America, and some simple Portuguese! Children also made their own carnival masks and participated in the enthusiastic carnival together! Everyone sang and danced, feeling the charm of Brazilian music and dance. The most interesting part is the study of the tropical rainforest. The rainforest has four layers, in which there are many lovely animals and plants, and it is a mysterious treasure. The children also worked in groups to reproduce the model of the tropical rainforest. Not only did they reproduce the four layers scientifically, but they also made model animals! The children"s research skills, teamwork skills, communication skills, creativity and imagination are all exercised and strengthened unconsciously in the pleasant learning process.
G3-Thailand
During World Culture week, G3 students went on a virtual trip to Thailand! They would try to lead and plan this trip by themselves! Before departure, the children would have a deep understanding of Thailand"s geographical location, climate characteristics, places of interest, popular food, etc. in advance, so that they could plan a reasonable route, make a budget and pack their luggage in advance. Some children want to see the magnificent Grand Palace and they try to find companions by introducing it vividly to other children; some children want to see elephants, so they need to know the significance of elephants in Thai culture. This trip to Thailand also requires children to make clay magnet elephants as mementos from the Thailand Elephant Sanctuary. We believe this is indeed a wonderful trip to Thailand that cannot be missed!
G4-Inida
G4 students became reporters to India during this World Culture week, to explore and report, and finally unveil the magic veil of this ancient country for readers...HD passports in hands, the reporters are ready to go! Along the way, the young reporters systematically learned about India"s geography, climate, and wild animals. They learned that everything from snow-capped mountains to endless deserts can all be found in India; the young reporters also "visited" famous world cultures Heritage - Taj Mahal and appreciated this white building from the perspective of structure and aesthetics; young reporters also experienced the traditional Indian culture: Rangoli. Before the grand festival, every household in India will paint colorful ground paintings with colored powder on the ground in front of the house. These ground paintings are called Rangoli, which are generally considered to be a symbol of cleanliness, auspiciousness, and hospitality. Our reporters drew their own rangolis. These works will be printed on the bags with the help of the teacher in the future.
After the exploration, the little reporters will put what they saw and heard in the past three days into a travel brochure with rich content and tell more people about the mysterious ancient India!
G5-South Korea
During the World Culture week, the students from G5 “visited” China"s neighbor - South Korea, and learned about South Korea"s geography, food, culture etc. in an all-round way. Together, children explored why there had been an astonishing rise in Korean culture in recent years, known as the "Korean Wave," and learn, respect, and celebrate cultural diversity.
During the learning of Korean traditional festivals and culture, the most popular part among the children was about making Ddakji and Yut Nori by themselves and playing with friends in groups. Ddakji and Yut Nori are popular games for children and adults in Korea. Ddakji is similar to the “HuaPian” played by children, while Yut Nori requires children to make four wooden sticks and throw them to decide which way they will go on the chess board.
The children also read some famous Korean stories, learned the principles, and made storyboards of their favorite stories or legends. In the end, the children made a unique travel booklet based on what they learned and felt during the three days, which is full of learning results and happy memories!
Art and Steam
From Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes to Thailand Nielloware art; from Taj Mahal to Korean traditional folding fans, the art courses during World Cultural week can be described as a collection of global art, vision and culture. We paint the children"s wings of arts with color and explore the treasure house of art together.
G3-G5 students assembles and decorated tiny house models based on what they learnt last semester on Steam classes.
The Ocean
Japan
Brazil
Thailand
India
South Korea
Art and STEAM
