For the Grade 10 Interdisciplinary Unit (IDU), the students were off timetable to combine the subjects of the Arts and Individuals and Society (I&S) by creating a video about the silk road. Each group of 3-4 students were assigned an explorer and researched about them, and the Arts along the silk road. Each group created a video that incorporated a script, monologue, digital backdrop and musical score inspired by the silk road.
Let"s take a look at the role of each subject plays in the unit andwhatstudentshave achievedthroughthese classes.
Individuals & Societies
For I&S: Grade 10 I&S students will explore the changes that occured as cultures mixed on the silk road. Each group is assigned an explorer that will be used as a perspective. What did these explorers witness? Students will explore everything from early Chinese merchants all the way to Mongol conquerors and African scholars. Students will learn how to use primary sources, academic journals, and contemporary artwork to witness a lost world through the eyes of those that were there.
Visual Arts
For Visual Arts, students researched the iconography and motifs of the artwork/artifacts along the silk road in the geographical area and time period of their explorer. They used this and their scripts/monologues as inspiration to develop an artistic intention, sketches, and a final digital backdrop in Procreate for their videos.
Music
For Music, students gained inspiration from their research about their explorer, time period, and geographical area to develop a musical theme. They also used their scripts/monologues to inspire ideas for diegetic and non-diegetic sounds to enhance the narrative using GarageBand, while documenting their creative process.
Theatre
Theatre: In the IDU Grade 10 unit, Theatre students are using the context of The Silk Road and the narrative of the group video to write a monologue or a soliloquy. They choose a character such as an explorer or a trader and write a script from their perspective using techniques and conventions such as characterization, motivation, emotional journey, and subtext. They will use voice and staging techniques to build their interpretation and communicate the content of the scripts and perform the scene for video purposes.
